M is for Mailing List: ABC’s guide to shoestring marketing

M is for Mailing List

For two reasons…

Reason #1: You should always maintain a mailing list of your customers. For sending out holiday cards, notices for upcoming sales or events, etc.

Reason #2: I know it’s annoying to get “junk mail” but think of it as research. Sign up for mailing lists for companies or organizations that you actually like or sign up for a competitor’s mailing list. For the companies you do like – look at the types of things they send and what works for you. Do they write too much for you to want to read? Do they include a lot of pictures that engage your interest? For your competitor’s lists – look at what they’re sending out so you can position yourself accordingly. Do they have weekly sales? Do they send out too much email? By looking at the things you like and don’t like from others’ mailing lists, you can determine what will work for your mailing list marketing practices.

Great resources I like to use for email marketing are Constant Contact and Vertical Response.
